Actor Andrew Garfield has pushed back against a claim made by OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman regarding a brief interaction during the production of the upcoming biographical film 'Artificial.' While Altman stated that the two waved to one another while the movie was being shot near his residence, Garfield maintains that he had no direct contact with the tech billionaire and had never seen him in person during that period.

The discrepancy was highlighted in a recent interview with GQ, where Garfield addressed the anecdote shared by Altman. The actor admitted to being puzzled by the story and said he replayed the interview multiple times to understand exactly what Altman was describing. Garfield stated that he was very confused by the claim and insisted that he was not present for the supposed greeting. He noted that he had never seen Altman in real life during the shoot.

According to Garfield, the filming took place outside Altman's house on what he described as an eerie day. The production team had informed the cast and crew that Altman was not home, and only his security personnel were on site. Garfield recalled seeing one security guard but did not spot Altman himself. He suggested that Altman might have mistaken another person for him, though he acknowledged he had no definitive explanation for the mix-up.

To further clarify the situation, Garfield added that he did not use a body double during the production, which rules out the possibility of a stand-in causing the confusion. However, a representative for OpenAI provided a different account to GQ. The representative stated that Altman was indeed home during the filming and reiterated his belief that he waved at Garfield.

Altman first shared his perspective in an interview with Vanity Fair, where he recounted walking down the street to get coffee one morning. He noticed several cameras on the set and observed a man dressed exactly like himself, carrying the same backpack. Altman described the moment as feeling like a glitch in the simulation. He said he immediately realized what was happening once he recognized the actor.

The OpenAI CEO added that he and the actor simply waved and went on with their respective days. He found the experience strange, particularly because Garfield had captured his quirky mannerisms so well. Altman emphasized that the wave was a one-time occurrence and that it was a peculiar moment to see someone portray his specific habits so accurately.

The film 'Artificial' is directed by Luca Guadagnino and is scheduled to open in theaters on Christmas Day, distributed by Neon. The movie is set during the turbulent period in 2023 when Altman was briefly fired from OpenAI and then rehired. The cast includes Ike Barinholtz portraying co-founder Elon Musk, Monica Barbaro as former CTO Mira Murati, and Yura Borisov as former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever.

Mark Rylance also appears in the cast, playing Nobel Prize winner Geoffrey Hinton. The narrative focuses on the internal dynamics and external pressures surrounding the AI giant during that significant year. The differing accounts from Garfield and Altman add a layer of behind-the-scenes intrigue to the film's release.

Garfield's comments suggest a minor but notable disagreement between the actor and the subject of his portrayal. Both parties agree that the production was filmed outside Altman's home, but their recollections of the specific interaction differ. The actor's insistence that he was never home or present for the wave contrasts with the executive's memory of the exchange.

As the release date approaches, attention remains on the film's portrayal of the 2023 events at OpenAI. The cast and crew have worked to depict the complex relationships and high-stakes environment of the company. The anecdote about the wave, while small, has become a talking point regarding the authenticity and behind-the-scenes dynamics of the production.
