Milwaukee has its World Series trophy. The Brewers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 on Wednesday night at Tropicana Field to complete a four-game sweep of the 2026 championship. The victory marks the first title in the 58-year history of the franchise, which began as the Seattle Pilots in 1969 before relocating to Wisconsin in 1970.
The path to the trophy was defined by resilience. The team entered Game 5 trailing 3-0 in the series after a heartbreaking 4-3 extra-inning loss in Game 4. Milwaukee was three outs away from elimination in the 12th inning before their bullpen faltered. Manager Pat Murphy, 67, guided the squad through the collapse. Murphy survived a heart attack in 2020 and won the NL Manager of the Year award in both 2024 and 2025.
The pitching performance on Wednesday was led by Jacob Misiorowski. The 24-year-old right-hander threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. He left the game due to a right calf cramp. Misiorowski opened the game with 12 consecutive four-seam fastballs, ranging from 100.9 to 103 mph. He had not recorded a strikeout in his first three innings until the fifth frame. He finished with two strikeouts and 58 strikes out of 86 pitches.
Rookie Cooper Pratt provided the offensive spark. The 22-year-old set a World Series record with six consecutive hits before collecting a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. He also scored on a single by David Hamilton. Jackson Chourio finished the series with 11 hits, setting a record for a five-game World Series. William Contreras, the series MVP, hit an RBI double to extend the lead to 4-0.
The championship concludes a postseason run in which the Brewers went 11-2. The team swept the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS and secured seven comeback victories. They led the majors with 103 wins during the regular season. The team's success came despite ranking 19th in payroll as of August 31, while the Rays ranked 25th.
The win has immediate implications for the league's economic structure. Owners are currently pressing the players' association for a salary cap, arguing that small-market teams cannot consistently compete. This was the first World Series since 1991 contested by two teams with payrolls in the bottom half of the league. A management lockout is scheduled to begin on December 2, which could impact the 2027 season.
Tampa Bay now holds a 0-3 record in their first three World Series appearances. The Rays fell behind 3-0 in the 2026 series and failed to force a sixth game. Only the Brooklyn Dodgers and Detroit Tigers have lost their first three series appearances more frequently than the 2026 Rays.
