Gerardo Segundo, a 21-year-old Harris County detention officer, was charged with misdemeanor driving while intoxicated following a Sunday night collision in Humble. The officer, who has served with the Harris County Sheriff's Office for three years, is currently on administrative leave.

Surveillance footage from the residence of Alfonso Pineda recorded the incident around 1:50 a.m. The video shows blinding headlights and engine noise before the vehicle strikes a fence. Pineda described the impact as the loudest boom he had ever heard. By the time he stepped outside, the driver had fled, leaving a truck bumper and scattered debris at the scene.

Deputies from the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's Office tracked a liquid trail from the crash site to a home located a few streets away. Court records indicate officers recovered a damaged pickup truck from that location and used it to match the parts left behind at Pineda's property.

Segundo refused a field sobriety test but was arrested based on observed symptoms including bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and the smell of alcohol. Although a magistrate found no probable cause for a separate charge of criminal mischief regarding the fence damage, the DWI charge remains active.

Pineda estimates the repair costs for the fence at $3,000. He noted that the truck missed a section of the wall by only a few feet, where he and his wife were sleeping. Pineda, who did not realize Segundo was his neighbor or a detention officer until after the arrest, said the situation would have been better if the officer had stayed at the scene.

As of Monday, no one answered at Segundo's home, and online court records did not list an attorney of record for the defendant. The Harris County Sheriff's Office confirmed the officer is on leave pending the outcome of his court proceedings.
