Jester King Brewery announced on Wednesday that it is seeking a new owner. The decision comes as the company enters its 17th year of operation. Jeff Stuffings and Michael Steffing, the brothers who founded the business in 2010, stated that the brand requires a stronger financial foundation to reach its full potential.

The brewery, located on a 168-acre ranch in Dripping Springs, west of Austin, will remain open during the search for a buyer. Stuffings noted that margins have remained thin for the company over the past three to four years. He described the goal of the sale as injecting new financial life into the business to capitalize on the existing work and community presence.

The shift in ownership strategy reflects changes in consumer preferences within the craft beer market. Jester King originally built its reputation on traditional farmhouse brewing, utilizing Texas well water and local ingredients. However, the company has moved toward producing mainstream IPAs, lagers, and stouts in recent years. This pivot aims to maximize product volume and profit, as wild beers require substantial capital and time to produce.

The decline in demand for the brewery's signature styles is evident in sales data. Stuffings reported that annual sales of mixed fermentation farmhouse beers fell from 2,000 barrels to 400 barrels. He cited a broad drop in interest for these styles beginning in 2022. The brewery now views its business model as similar to a three-year-old startup despite its 16-year history.

The founders expressed a desire to remain involved with the company after the sale. Stuffings indicated that the brothers hope to continue steering the brewery's direction under new ownership. He emphasized that independence remains central to the company's culture, even as it seeks outside investment.

This announcement occurs as the Texas craft beer industry faces contraction. Recent data from Axios indicates that the number of craft breweries in the state dropped for the second consecutive year. Factors contributing to the slowdown include decreased alcohol consumption, shifts in consumer preferences toward other beverages, and rising costs for ingredients, goods, and real estate.

Jester King has also focused on self-distribution, shipping goods directly to retailers across the state. Stuffings expressed confidence in this distribution model as part of the brewery's ongoing operations. The company continues to produce its popular barrel-aged wild ales, such as the Atrial Rubicite, which requires six to 12 months to complete.
