Marilyn Hampton, a former custodian in the Aubrey independent school district, will have a new elementary school named in her honor. The district board voted to name the upcoming facility, designated as Elementary School No. 5, after Hampton during a meeting on 21 October. The decision recognizes her 39 years of service, a tenure that concluded with her retirement in 2022.

District officials stated that Hampton’s role extended beyond standard maintenance duties. She assisted students with academic work, purchased and distributed school supplies, and operated the ticket booth at football games. Superintendent Shannon Saylor noted that thousands of students, teachers, and staff members found inspiration in Hampton’s daily contributions to the school community.

The naming was announced through a staged surprise during the board meeting. Hampton was invited to speak on a general school matter. Instead, Saylor asked her to unroll a red carpet that displayed the words "Marilyn Hampton Elementary School" in navy blue lettering. Saylor described Hampton as a teacher and educator at heart, despite her lack of a formal teaching title.

Hampton reacted with visible emotion to the announcement. She told the room, "Y'all are too good," while covering her mouth. She added, "I wasn't expecting this. Thank y'all. I love all of y'all, always miss y'all." After pausing to compose herself, Hampton looked at a monitor displaying an architectural rendering of the building. She joked, "They better keep it clean," a remark that prompted laughter from the attendees.

In a subsequent interview with WFAA, Hampton expressed disbelief at the recognition. She said, "I still can't believe it. I haven't stopped crying." During the interview, she wore a t-shirt bearing the name of the new school. Hampton reflected on her personal history, noting she was the only member of her eight siblings to graduate high school.

The new campus is currently under construction. Officials have scheduled the opening for August of next year. The addition places Hampton’s name alongside historical figures and presidents typically honored in U.S. school naming conventions. The district’s governing board recorded the entire meeting, and the video has circulated widely across online platforms.
