Jordanian security forces arrested three armed men on Monday following a shooting at a Greek Orthodox church that killed nine people. State television reported that the suspects were located in Karak governorate, where they had been hiding since the attack.
The incident occurred on Friday during a funeral service in the village of Hamoud, which lies approximately 120 kilometres southwest of Amman. Witnesses stated that gunfire continued for several minutes, resulting in nine deaths and 40 injuries.
The Public Security Directorate said officers tracked the men to an abandoned house. The suspects refused to surrender and opened fire on the security team. Forces returned the fire, wounding the men and placing all three under arrest. Authorities stated that no security personnel were injured during the exchange.
Officers recovered multiple firearms and ammunition from the suspects. The directorate described the attack as the work of extremist terrorists but did not name the suspects or confirm ties to specific Islamist militant groups. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the violence.
King Abdullah II, a close partner to the United States in countering regional extremism, instructed security forces to respond with an iron fist. Interior Minister Mazen al-Faraya said officials are reviewing factors that drive young people toward extremism. He added that all participants in the attack would face accountability.
The directorate stated in a release that terrorism has no place in the country and that the suspects had met their just fate. Jordan remains one of the more stable nations in the Middle East, though officials have disrupted several Islamist plots in recent years.
