The celebration turned violent near the city's biggest annual football gathering.
Police responded to the 400 block of Graymont Avenue around 7:50 p.m. Saturday after reports of gunshots near the Magic City Classic. The event, known as the largest historically Black college and university football game in the United States, drew thousands to Birmingham, Alabama. Officers immediately suspended tailgating in the area to manage the crowd and secure the scene.
Investigators recovered multiple firearms at the location and detained one person for questioning. That individual was taken to police headquarters. No first responders or officers were hurt in the incident.
By early Sunday morning, authorities confirmed one victim had died and at least eight others were injured. One patient remained in critical condition while the other seven were listed as stable.
Chief Michael Pickett called the incident a senseless act of violence. He noted that the event places a heavy strain on department resources. Other law enforcement leaders quickly offered support. Pickett described officers running toward the gunfire to triage and aid victims as a display of true courage. He thanked the team for allowing them to return home to their families that night.
The shooting occurred during a period of high visibility for the city. The Magic City Classic serves as a major cultural and sporting fixture in Birmingham. Police continue to review evidence from the scene to determine the full extent of the attack.
