Lamine Yamal is the statistical favorite to win the 2026 Ballon d'Or, according to a new analysis by the French AI firm Avisia. The 19-year-old Barcelona winger holds a 23 percent probability of winning the award, which recognizes the best player in the 2025-26 season. The ceremony is scheduled to take place at the London Palladium in less than 24 hours.

The AI model places Harry Kane in second position with a 21 percent chance. Kylian Mbappe and Rodri, the 2024 winner, are tied for third at 19 percent. Lionel Messi rounds out the top five with an 18 percent probability, a result that would mark his ninth title. Avisia noted that its model correctly predicted the top five candidates for the previous year's award, which went to Ousmane Dembele.

Despite the AI projection, traditional bookmakers tell a different story. Betting markets currently list Kane as the outright favorite, assigning him a 70 percent probability of victory. This creates a distinct split between algorithmic predictions and market sentiment regarding the outcome of the vote.

The debate among players and experts mirrors this division. Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone supports his compatriot Messi, citing the forward's performance at age 38 following his retirement from international duty. Simeone stated, “After the World Cup, he played at his age… No doubt about it.” Former Italy international Marco Materazzi agreed, arguing that Messi operates in a different league despite the young age of competitors like Yamal.

Jude Bellingham, who is also on the shortlist, backed England captain Kane. Bellingham described Kane as an honest and hard-working individual who makes a win “definitely possible.” In contrast, Barcelona teammate Anthony Gordon championed Yamal, calling the younger player’s achievements at his age “ridiculous” and placing him on a “whole other level.” Real Madrid teammate Aurelien Tchouameni supported Mbappe, noting the Frenchman’s “incredible season.”

On the statistical front, Mbappe leads in individual scoring metrics. He finished as the top scorer in La Liga with 25 goals and led the Champions League with 15. He also won the Golden Boot at the 2026 World Cup and set the record for most World Cup goals with 12. Kane matched these individual efforts with 73 goals in the previous season, a total that stood as the highest for any player since Messi scored 82 in 2011-12.

However, neither Mbappe nor Kane won a major trophy during their campaigns. Mbappe failed to secure a title with his club or country, while Kane won the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich but finished third with England at the World Cup. Yamal, by comparison, won the World Cup with Spain and the La Liga title with Barcelona. His personal statistics were lower due to injury, but the team successes provide a strong argument for his candidacy.

Historical data favors the title-winning approach. In the last 19 years, only four Ballon d'Or winners did not lift a major continental or world championship during their award year. Yamal is positioned to become the youngest recipient in history if he wins, surpassing Brazilian Ronaldo, who was 21 when he received the honor in 1997.

The final decision rests with the voters, who must weigh raw goal output against the weight of major team trophies. The gap between the 23 percent AI confidence in Yamal and the 70 percent bookmaker backing for Kane illustrates the uncertainty surrounding the final result.
