New York's defense is struggling with turnovers and transition plays, while key starters shoot poorly in early season.

The New York Knicks lost their third consecutive game on Sunday night, falling to the Orlando Magic in a contest where Orlando played without star forward Paolo Banchero.

The loss places the Knicks in a rare position in modern basketball history. In the league's 80-year existence, only three champions have begun their title defense with a 0-3 record: the 1969 Boston Celtics, the 2011 Dallas Mavericks, and now the Knicks.

The team's struggles are evident in their shooting percentages. New York currently holds the lowest true-shooting percentage in the league. Their field goal percentage stands at 40.8%, a mark surpassed only by the Charlotte Hornets. From beyond the arc, the Knicks are shooting just 32.4%, contributing to the second-worst offensive rating in the NBA.

Individual performance has dropped sharply for several starters. Jalen Brunson is shooting 39% from the field and 26% from three-point range. OG Anunoby is at 41% from the floor and 28% from deep. Josh Hart is shooting 41% overall and 33% from three, but his volume has increased, with 7.0 three-point attempts per game compared to 3.7 last season.

Mikal Bridges has seen the steepest decline. The guard averages 3.3 points on 5-for-23 shooting. He has missed all 10 of his three-point attempts and has not made a single jump shot outside the paint. When Bridges is on the floor, the Knicks have a net rating of minus-26.1 over 183 possessions. With him on the bench, that figure flips to plus-26.6 over 109 possessions.

Ball security remains a persistent issue. The Knicks are turning the ball over on nearly 17% of their possessions, up from 13.9% last season. These mistakes are costly, as New York concedes almost 21 points per game off its own turnovers. Against Orlando, the team committed six fourth-quarter turnovers and lost the points-off-turnovers battle, 23 to 12.

Transition defense has also faltered. New York gave up 24 fast-break points to the Philadelphia 76ers in the opening game, the most in the last 58 games including the playoffs. According to Cleaning the Glass, the Knicks allow 145.5 points per transition play, ranking fourth worst in the league. Head coach Mike Brown noted after the Orlando loss that there is no single factor to blame for the start, as the team plays well in stretches but lacks consistency.

The Knicks face a difficult path to maintain their title. Only the 1990-91 Chicago Bulls started 0-3 and won the championship that same season. While the team defied odds last year, the current evidence suggests they need to correct these offensive and defensive inefficiencies quickly to secure a high seed in the Eastern Conference.
