Lionsgate announced the first tour dates for the stage adaptation of Freida McFadden’s novel The Housemaid. The production will open at London’s Richmond Theatre on September 14, 2027. It will tour the United Kingdom and conclude its run on April 29, 2028. No dates have been set for a North American tour yet.
Bekah Brunstetter, a Tony Award nominee, will write the play. Matthew Dunster, an Olivier Award nominee, has signed on to direct. The announcement follows the success of the film adaptation that starred Amanda Seyfried and Sydney Sweeney. That movie opened in theaters in December 2025.
Lionsgate confirmed a sequel based on the book The Housemaid’s Secret will also enter production. The follow-up film is scheduled to premiere in theaters on December 17, 2027. Jenefer Brown, Lionsgate’s president of Global Products and Experiences, addressed the expanding franchise in a press release. She stated, “With the stage play debuting next year and our sequel film in production, the momentum behind The Housemaid franchise continues to grow.”
The story centers on Millie, a convicted felon who takes a job as a housekeeper for Nina Winchester. Nina is a wealthy woman who behaves as a demanding and irrational employer. Millie develops feelings for Nina’s husband, Andrew. The plot shifts when Millie realizes neither spouse is who they appear to be. This discovery leads to chaos, violence, and murder.
The stage play is described as a psychological thriller. It will be the first live theatrical adaptation of McFadden’s work. The 2027 tour will take place in the UK. The 2027 film sequel is currently in production. Both projects are part of the ongoing expansion of the Housemaid franchise.
