Fatal shooting at Madison high school leaves four victims

A shooting at a youth football championship game in Madison, Illinois, killed one person and injured three others on Sunday night.

The incident took place at Madison Senior High School around 9:50 p.m. The game was unrelated to the school’s own athletic program. Emergency responders transported the three injured victims to local hospitals. The fourth victim died at the scene. The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis has taken over the investigation.

Lt. Andrew Pierson, the public information officer for the Major Case Squad, urged the public to share any details they might have. “You do not have to have the whole story, a single photo, a short video, or one detail you think is insignificant may be exactly what moves this investigation forward,” Pierson said. Authorities are currently asking witnesses to come forward.

The school district canceled classes on Monday. Normal operations are scheduled to resume on Wednesday. The district released a statement noting it is deeply saddened by the violence. Although the game was not organized or sponsored by the district, officials said the incident affects the entire school community. Counseling and support services will be provided to students and staff.

Investigators have established a command post for tips. People with information can call 618-709-7750 or contact CrimeStoppers at 866-371-8477. No suspect has been named in the release.
