Manchester United supporters turned on their team and manager after a 3-0 loss to Bournemouth on Sunday extended the club's worst start to a league season in four decades. The defeat at Old Trafford triggered a rare display of unrest, with fans cheering as manager Michael Carrick left the pitch and then booing the playing squad as they walked off.

This reaction signaled a shift in the relationship between the club and its base. Historically, United fans have been patient, but the current situation has eroded that goodwill. The message from the stands was directed at everyone from the Glazer family owners to the senior management and the players themselves, indicating that the tolerance for poor results has run out.

The team's struggles are compounded by a lack of consistent goal-scoring. Since Cristiano Ronaldo departed in November 2022, the side has failed to establish a reliable striker. Previous attempts to fill the void, including signings of Rasmus Hojlund and Benjamin Sesko, have not yielded the desired output. Sesko, who arrived in the summer of 2025, has been hindered by injuries and has been absent for key matches.

Bryan Mbeumo currently leads the Premier League scoring charts for United with four goals. However, eight other players in the league have already surpassed that total. The club has also experimented with placing playmaker Bruno Fernandes in a false nine role, a position that contrasts with his traditional playmaking duties and has led to tactical inconsistencies.

Off the pitch, scrutiny has intensified on the ownership group. The Glazer family has controlled the club since 2005, a period during which 75 players were signed with mixed results. CEO Omar Berrada and technical director Jason Wilcox are currently under fire for recruitment decisions. Sir Jim Ratcliffe, whose INEOS Group invested in the club two years ago, has also faced criticism, with fans viewing the investment as a source of off-field cuts rather than immediate on-field improvement.

Defender Lisandro Martinez recently criticized Wilcox for a perceived lack of investment in the summer transfer window. Martinez, who helped Argentina reach the 2026 World Cup final, voiced his concerns after a defeat to Atletico Madrid. This internal tension highlights the friction between the playing staff and the hierarchy responsible for squad building.

The relationship between Carrick and Fernandes is also under strain. Fernandes, who won the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year award for breaking the record for most assists in a season, publicly criticized Carrick's tactics following a loss to Como. He was booed by fans on Sunday despite not playing, a punishment for his vocal dissent.

Former United defender Gary Neville commented on the squad's issues, suggesting that certain players lack professionalism. Neville stated, "There are a few of them that are not that professional," adding to the narrative of a disjointed group. The club faces decisions on its tactical identity, with previous attempts at various formations failing to produce sustained success. The coming weeks will likely bring further changes as the club seeks to stabilize its position.
