Stanford's road losing streak reached 15 games on Saturday, a mark that now stands as the longest active skid in the Football Bowl Subdivision. The Cardinal fell 52-24 to Louisville, dropping to 0-4 on the road this season after being outscored 150-17 in their previous three away contests.
The loss capped a difficult stretch for Stanford, which had averaged just 5.8 points and 212 yards per game on the road prior to Saturday. The team managed to surpass its previous three-game road total of 17 points, but the extra effort was not enough to change the outcome against the host Cardinals.
Louisville quarterback Lincoln Kienholz was the engine behind the victory, throwing for 250 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for a score. He gained 62 yards on the ground, including a 33-yard run in the third quarter that set up his own 1-yard touchdown. That play gave the Cardinals a lead they never relinquished.
Coach Brian Brohm credited Kienholz for his versatility and consistency. "He was getting it done with his legs and through the arms today," Brohm said. "He’s been really steady. He plays tough and he makes big plays for us."
The Cardinals found their footing after a back-and-forth first half. Stanford led twice in the second quarter and tied the game at 24 in the third. Louisville then scored 28 unanswered points to break the contest open, outscoring Stanford 21-7 in the third quarter following a defensive interception.
Tre Richardson provided a reliable target, catching 10 passes for 140 yards. The Cardinals finished with 545 total yards of offense, splitting the effort between 249 through the air and 296 on the ground. Isaac Brown led the rushing attack with 139 yards, which included a 75-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Brohm noted that the team's message at halftime was straightforward despite their status as favorites. "We don’t really look at favorite or not favorite," he said. "We think every conference game is going to be tough. (If) we don’t play well, we’re not going to win. We talk about it all the time. We understand that."
Stanford quarterback Davis Warren threw for 270 yards and three touchdowns. He connected with Aiden Black for a 75-yard score in the second quarter. The Cardinal finished the season segment at 4-5 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
Louisville was missing leading wide receiver Lawayne McCoy, who is expected to be out for an "extended time" with a knee injury. McCoy had caught 25 passes for 513 yards and four touchdowns in the team's first seven games. Despite his absence, the Cardinals capitalized on their ground game, averaging nine yards per carry, a figure that exceeds their national average of 5.9.
Brohm improved to 5-1 in games following a bye week. The Cardinals will travel to Georgia Tech next Saturday, while Stanford heads to Virginia Tech on November 14.
