A false start on the final play of regulation ended the Kansas City Chiefs' chance to win the game, ceding the AFC West lead to the Denver Broncos.

The Chiefs were penalized 11 times for a total of 105 yards on Sunday, a season-worst figure in both categories for the team. The most recent time Kansas City committed that many penalties was during a loss in Jacksonville last season, when they incurred 13 penalties for 109 yards. The high penalty total disrupted the offensive flow and created short fields for the defense, but it most directly affected the closing moments of the game.

Right tackle Jaylon Moore was flagged for the false start with four seconds remaining. The play was called after Kenneth Walker III was stopped for no gain on a third-down run, leaving the Chiefs on fourth-and-goal at the Denver 1-yard line. Head coach Andy Reid disputed the call, stating he saw Moore move his head but did not see the false start. Replays indicated that Moore flinched with his right leg and rocked back slightly before turning his head, which constituted the violation.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw a touchdown pass to Rashee Rice on that play, but the signal was whistled dead. Rice had returned to the lineup for the first time in a month following a hamstring injury. Mahomes acknowledged the missed opportunity, noting that the team wanted to capitalize on reaching the 1-yard line. He said the team made too many mistakes to win against a quality opponent. The loss dropped the Chiefs to a 5-2 record, while the Broncos improved to 6-2 and took sole possession of the division lead.

The penalty issues extended throughout the first half, where Kansas City was flagged eight times for 75 yards. Despite the infractions, the Chiefs led 17-13 at intermission. Denver benefited from several penalties, including an 18-yard pass interference call on Kristian Fulton and a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty on Jack Cochrane, which set up a 39-yard field goal by Will Lutz. The Broncos also received help from a 15-yard facemask penalty on Drue Tranquill and a pass interference call on Alohi Gilman during their first-half touchdown drive.

In the second half, Denver capitalized on a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty on Gilman to move into the red zone. Quarterback Bo Nix threw a touchdown pass to Nate Adkins on fourth-and-goal, giving the Broncos a lead they did not relinquish. Nix finished the game 20 of 32 for 222 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. The Chiefs' defense forced three consecutive three-and-outs to start the second half, but penalties on those drives limited the damage for Denver. A missed 54-yard field goal by Harrison Butker allowed the Broncos to take over at their own 44-yard line.

Running back Emmett Johnson provided a bright spot for the Chiefs, finishing with five catches for 128 yards. He recorded the team's longest offensive touchdown of the season with a 73-yard catch-and-run. This marked the longest offensive score for Kansas City since a 75-yard pass to Tyreek Hill in the 2021 season opener. Johnson also added 119 receiving yards in the first half, a career high for a running back under Reid. Kenneth Walker III had a limited outing with 21 carries for 69 yards and four catches for 15 yards.

The game concluded with the Chiefs trailing 28-24. The Broncos secured the division lead with the victory, ending a losing streak in the season series. The Chiefs will look to correct the penalty issues as they prepare for their next matchup.
