Arizona football has dominated the Cowboys at their home ground in recent years, a streak that extended on Sunday with a 33-30 victory. The result came after a chaotic final minute of regulation and a decisive kick in overtime.
The Cowboys held the lead for most of the contest, building a two-touchdown advantage early in the fourth quarter. However, the defense, which had performed well earlier in the season, struggled in the final 16 minutes. Arizona running back Tyler Allgeier, playing as the only available back, fueled the comeback. He rushed for a 63-yard touchdown, a career-high for him, and later caught a five-yard touchdown pass. Allgeier finished with 191 total yards, recording 147 on the ground and 44 in the air. Nearly all of those yards came after halftime.
With 1:05 remaining in regulation, Arizona took over and moved 80 yards in eight plays. Quarterback Gardner Minshew, who had replaced Jacoby Brissett in the third quarter, found Michael Wilson for a 14-yard touchdown with six seconds left. The teams were tied at 30. Chad Ryland attempted the extra point to end the game but missed to the left. He had successfully made a previous kick from 58 yards out.
The missed extra point forced the game into overtime. This was the third time since 2000 that a team missed a potential game-winning extra point in the final ten seconds of regulation. Previous instances include Cincinnati in 2022 and Tampa Bay in 2003. In the extra session, the Cowboys failed to score after going three-and-out. Ryland then kicked a 42-yard field goal to secure the win for Arizona.
Injuries played a major role for both rosters. For Dallas, safety Caleb Downs suffered a concussion in the second half, and tight end Jake Ferguson exited the game with an ankle injury in the first quarter. Quarterback Dak Prescott threw for a touchdown and ran for a score, but the offense could not close out the game. Arizona lost wide receiver Kendrick Bourne to an ankle injury and left tackle Jayden Williams to a knee injury.
The Cardinals improved to 5-0 at AT&T Stadium, the venue that opened in 2009. The Cowboys dropped to 3-5. Arizona will travel to Seattle next Sunday, while Dallas hosts Indianapolis at home.
The final score of 33-30 marks the fifth consecutive win for Arizona over Dallas. The game concluded with a decisive kick rather than a defensive stop or a touchdown.
