Mexican media figure Inés Gómez Mont is contesting her immigration detention in the United States through federal court proceedings in Florida. Her legal team filed a habeas corpus petition on Monday, November 2, asking a federal judge to examine the legality of her October 30 arrest in Miami.
The filing included an emergency motion intended to prevent her transfer to another detention center while her case is reviewed. Judge Jeffrey Kuntz denied that specific request. Instead, he issued an order requiring Immigration and Customs Enforcement to provide a written justification for her detention by Wednesday, November 4.
Gómez Mont remains under the jurisdiction of US immigration authorities. Records indicate she is currently held at the Broward Transitional Center in Pompano Beach, Florida. Officials are using this period to determine her legal status within the country.
Her detention stems from her migration situation in the US. She has faced legal pressure since September 2021, when Mexican authorities issued an arrest order citing alleged misappropriation of public funds, tax evasion, and transactions involving illicit money.
It is not yet clear if Mexico has formally requested her immediate extradition. The judge’s order places the burden on US agents to explain the basis of her hold before the next scheduled deadline.
