Drivers and commuters in Rankin County, Mississippi, will soon see changes to their daily routes on Mississippi Highway 18. A federal award of more than $56 million was announced Friday to build a railroad bridge over the highway. This construction will eliminate the current at-grade crossing where Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) trains currently share the road with vehicles.

The project aims to resolve serious congestion and safety hazards caused by the existing intersection. By constructing a separate railway bridge, the state plans to remove the need for road closures during train passages. This change is expected to keep freight moving efficiently while allowing steady traffic flow for local residents and businesses.

U.S. Senator Roger Wicker described the grant as the result of years of effort by local officials. He stated that the funding ensures the county has the necessary resources to finish the project. Wicker emphasized that the work is part of a larger momentum in Mississippi, driven by state and community leaders who are implementing bold visions for infrastructure.

U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith also commented on the announcement. She noted that Rankin County leaders had long sought to fix transportation and public safety issues stemming from a growing population. Hyde-Smith said the federal grant will improve safety, mobility, and emergency response reliability. She added that the project will enhance freight movements and community connectivity for the region.

The federal government tracks participation in various skilled trades, a sector where women have seen steady growth in recent years. According to data from the Wall Street Journal, women made up about 4.4% of workers in fields such as construction and installation as of last year. This figure has risen from 2.9% a decade earlier, reflecting a broader trend of women entering traditionally male-dominated jobs.

In Michigan, Rep. Haley Stevens endorsed Republican Mike Rogers in the U.S. Senate race two days before Election Day. The move followed a rift with Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed, who disinvited Stevens from a rally after she criticized an ad blaming U.S. support for Israel for high grocery costs. Stevens cited factors including El-Sayed's past appearance with Twitch streamer Hasan Piker for her decision to switch support.

Polls from the New York Times and Siena University show Democrats leading Republicans in six of seven key Senate battleground states. Democratic candidates are ahead in Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Ohio, and Texas, with a narrow edge in Alaska. The candidates in Iowa are effectively tied. Democrats need to flip at least four Republican-held seats to win a majority, aided by a nine-percentage-point advantage on cost-of-living issues.

On the college football field, Ole Miss remained at No. 12 in the AP Top 25 after defeating Auburn 45-15 on Saturday. Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss surpassed 6,000 career passing yards and threw a touchdown pass for the 21st consecutive game. The Rebel defense recorded a season-high 10 tackles for loss, and the team won its 16th consecutive home game, tying for the second-longest active streak in the FBS.
