María Corina Machado stepped into a church in Lara State on Sunday, ending nearly 11 months of exile. The Nobel laureate and opposition leader announced her arrival on social media with the message, “I am here. With you.” A crowd of supporters gathered inside to greet her with applause and embraces.

This marks Machado’s first public appearance on Venezuelan soil since December. She initially went into hiding after a brief detention during anti-government protests. During her time abroad, she campaigned for a democratic transition and accepted the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo. Previous attempts to re-enter the country faced obstacles, including denied landing permissions in neighboring Caribbean territories.

Fellow opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia confirmed the return. He described the moment as a vital step for the nation’s democratic future. González Urrutia stated that he plans to rejoin Machado in Venezuela in the near future.

The political situation in Caracas has shifted substantially since Machado left. Former President Nicolás Maduro was removed from power by the U.S. military in January and transported to New York to face federal drug charges. Delcy Rodríguez, a longtime official in the ruling party, assumed the role of interim president with support from Washington.

Criticism of the interim administration has intensified as it has passed its original timeframe without setting a date for national presidential elections. Machado and her coalition continue to push the current government for a firm electoral timeline. The opposition demands a quick return to the polls, safe passage for political exiles, and the release of political prisoners. U.S. diplomats have focused on economic stabilization measures before voting.

President Donald Trump spoke to reporters on Sunday regarding Machado’s return. He noted that he was unfamiliar with the specific details of her arrival. He expressed warm sentiments toward the opposition leader and voiced hope for her safety.
