Two central figures of the Star Trek franchise died within four days of each other in late October 2026.
Walter Koenig passed away on Sunday at age 90. Patrick Stewart died on the following Thursday. Koenig portrayed Ensign Pavel Chekov in the original series from 1966 to 1969. Stewart played Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the 1987 launch of Star Trek: The Next Generation and later starred in the Star Trek: Picard streaming series.
The losses occurred as the franchise approaches the end of a decade-long streaming run. Paramount, the company that owns the property, is undergoing corporate changes. Fans are actively discussing the future of the brand on online forums.
William Shatner, who played Captain James T. Kirk in the original series, described the week as heartbreaking. He noted that he and George Takei are the only two surviving members of that initial cast. Takei played Helmsman Hikaru Sulu. Shatner is 95 years old, and Takei is 89.
Shatner and Takei have maintained an active public presence. Shatner recently announced a project fronting a heavy-metal band. Takei continues to post content on social media, including his recurring "Oh, Myyyy" posts. The two actors have had a complex relationship over the decades.
Takei and Koenig sat next to each other on the bridge of the Enterprise in the original series. Takei posted on social media that his heart was heavy. He described Koenig as a writer, a teacher, and a thoughtful man. Takei told his friend to keep a steady course.
Koenig was added to the cast in the second season of the original show. Creator Gene Roddenberry wanted a Russian character to reflect Cold War tensions. Koenig's youthful appearance was designed to attract younger viewers. Anton Yelchin, who played a younger version of Chekov in the 2009 reboot film, died in 2016.
Patrick Stewart was a Shakespearean actor before joining Star Trek. Akiva Goldsman, the co-creator of the Picard series, said Stewart permanently expanded the universe of Star Trek. Stewart’s portrayal of Picard spanned decades and included a darker tone in the recent streaming drama.
The franchise has long dealt with themes of aging and mortality. These themes were prominent in Star Trek: Picard between 2020 and 2023. The show’s ethos generally favors optimism and the endurance of humanity, which is defined in the series to include more than just human species.
In the 1991 film Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, Kirk and Spock discussed the concept of the undiscovered country. In Hamlet, Shakespeare used the phrase to describe death. Shatner told a reporter in 2008 that none of the original cast would be around forever, but Star Trek would remain.
