East Lansing Police Chief Jennifer Brown confirmed on Sunday afternoon that five people sustained gunshot wounds during two separate shootings that occurred near the Michigan State University campus on Halloween night.
Brown stated that officers responded to four distinct incidents in the area. The first shooting was reported near the intersection of M.A.C. Avenue and Linden Street. In that event, multiple shots were fired, and three victims were transported to the hospital. Two of those individuals were listed in stable condition, while the status of the third was not immediately clear.
Later that night, police responded to a second shooting in the area of Stoddard and Frye Avenues. Two people were shot in that incident and are currently listed in stable condition. Brown noted that multiple guns were recovered from the scene, though officials had not yet determined if those specific weapons were used to fire the shots.
The chief said several individuals were taken into custody in connection with the violence. Police have not indicated whether the two shootings are linked. It also remains unclear if any of the victims are enrolled at Michigan State.
A university spokesperson said the Department of Police and Public Safety assisted East Lansing police in the response. The spokesperson added that the criminal activity did not involve a threat to the campus and did not take place on MSU property.
Brown added that the East Lansing Fire Department responded to 91 total incidents over a 24-hour period. Of those, 75 occurred on Halloween night alone.
