The window for Mississippi seniors to adjust their Medicare coverage opened on October 15 and closes on December 7, 2026. During this period, the Mississippi Department of Human Services is deploying counselors through its State Health Insurance Program, known as SHIP, to assist residents with their annual choices. Any changes finalized by the deadline will take effect on January 1, 2027.

SHIP operates as a free state initiative that provides unbiased insurance guidance. The program targets Medicare-eligible individuals, their families, and caregivers. Counselors help clients understand complex shifts in prescription drug costs, provider networks, and plan benefits. This support is designed to clarify how these factors impact household expenses and access to medical care.

KenYada Blake-Washington, the MDHS Division Director of Aging and Adult Services, emphasized that Medicare plans require annual review. "Like most health insurance plans, Medicare is not a one-size-fit-all. What may have worked last year, may not be suitable this year," Blake-Washington said. He noted that the agency's goal is to ensure older residents have the necessary information to make informed healthcare decisions without incurring any cost.

Counselors provide specific assistance with several administrative and financial tasks. They help clients organize doctor and hospital bills and file Medicare appeals if necessary. The team also reviews Medicare Supplemental Insurance policies and evaluates Health Maintenance Organization options. Additionally, they explore long-term care options and explain basic Medicare benefits and eligibility requirements.

MDHS recommends that all eligible individuals review their coverage annually, even if they are currently satisfied with their plan. Plan offerings and personal health needs often change from year to year. While those who do not wish to make updates are not required to take action, reviewing plan details before the December 7 deadline can help prevent unexpected costs or coverage gaps in the coming year.

The agency encourages residents to contact a SHIP counselor before the deadline to allow sufficient time to review options. Individuals can reach a counselor by calling 1-844-822-4622 or visiting the MDHS website at mdhs.ms.gov/aging/finding-services-for-older-adults for more information on the open enrollment process.

The program is part of the broader Division of Aging and Adult Services efforts to support the state's older adult population. The counseling service is available to those who are eligible for Medicare and reside in Mississippi. The open enrollment period runs through the end of the calendar year, providing a limited timeframe for making these specific healthcare adjustments.
